Navy holds haul of Kerala cannabis in seas North of Thalaimannar
The Navy held approximately 147kg of Kerala cannabis in wet weight, during a special petrol conducted in the seas North of Thalaimannar, today(21st March 2020).
The Navy conducts regular anti-drug operations in the territorial waters of the island to curb the drug smuggling activities across sea routes. Accordingly, Naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command carried out a special patrol in seas North of Thalaimannar lighthouse today and spotted 02 suspicious parcels floating on sea. During further search, approximately 147kg of Kerala cannabis in wet weight was found and it was taken into naval custody. The dry weight of this seized Kerala cannabis is about 120kg and its value has been estimated as Rs.24.0 million. It is believed that this stock of Kerala Cannabis which might have smuggled through sea routes have been abandoned due to continuous naval patrols.
The recovered stock of Kerala cannabis is due to be handed over to Mulankavil Police for onward investigation. SL Navy has apprehended more than 2 tons of Kerala Cannabis within past period of this year.
